Spitzer Announces Universal Broadband, Seeks Answers on Thruway Toll Increases

By Eileen Buckley

Niagara Falls, NY – Governor Eliot Spitzer appeared in Niagara Falls Thursday morning. He delivered a speech to the New York State Farm Bureau at their annual meeting, where he fulfilled a campaign promise by announcing plans for universal broadband service.

Spitzer says it is time to ensure affordable, high-speed Internet access for even the most remote areas of the state.

Reporters caught up with Spitzer afterward to ask him about the Thruway Authority's proposed toll increase. Spitzer says he is not taking sides. But the Governor did say he believes any toll hike should be put off until Authority spending questions are answered. Spitzer says he sent a letter to the Authority seeking answers.

Later Thursday, Spitzer received $135 million from the Seneca Gaming Corporation, representing the state's share of profits from the region's Seneca casinos.
