Brown says Buffalo Teachers should Live in City

By Eileen Buckley

Buffalo, NY – Mayor Byron Brown says city school teachers should live in Buffalo. That was his response to word that the Buffalo Board of Education is considering possible elimination of a residency rule for new teachers.

Buffalo School board member Ralph Hernandez says he would like to see an end to a residency rule for new teachers. He claims it hinders efforts when hiring. According to the district there are still 50-teaching positions available at city schools.

The residency issue is expected to be discussed at the school board's executive affairs committee meeting tonight. But Mayor Brown says he would not support a change to the current rule.

School board member Hernandez believes the residency issue could be considered at next Tuesday's regular board meeting.
