Ground Breaking for Buffalo's New Courthouse

design U.S. Courthouse, Buffalo, NY

By Eileen Buckley

Buffalo, NY – A ground breaking was held Tuesday for a new federal courthouse in downtown Buffalo is being called historic. It was an 11 year effort to convince the federal government to construct the new court house at Niagara Square.

U-S District Chief Judge Richard Arcara led the fight for the building. Arcara says it was a long and difficult journey.

U.S. Senator Charles Schumer attended the ground breaking. He delivered more than $83 million in funding for the project. The total price tag for the new court house is $137 million. The new 10-story courthouse is expected to open in 2010. The courthouse is considered a symbol of revitalizing downtown Buffalo.
