Albany, NY – Governor Spitzer is putting pressure on state lawmakers to pass his healthy schools act. The legislation would help combat childhood obesity and promote healthy lifestyles.
State legislators will be returning to Albany later this month to act on several measures that were left undone when they adjourned in June. State Senate Republicans plan to push a property tax break for senior citizens. Assembly Democrats want to change the rules for economic development grants to make them more accountable.
But Governor Spitzer says lawmakers should act on his healthy schools initiative.
Spitzer unveiled the legislation last Spring. Among other things, it would prohibit the sale of soda and candy in schools. And it would set limits on cholesterol, sodium and fats while banning trans fatty acids.
The Governor is also asking Senate Republicans to act on 70 nominees to various posts in his administration and to the board of the State University of New York.
