Niagara Falls Hospitals End Merger Talks

By Joyce Kryszak

Lewiston, NY – Mount Saint Mary's Hospital and Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center will not be merging. The presidents for the two hospitals announced Thursday that they failed to reach agreement.

Last year, the Berger Commission ordered the two sides to explore consolidation. But after monthsof "friendly" negotiations, hospital officials said fundamental philosophical differences prevent a merger.

Specifically, that means staunch differences over women's health care and reproductive services.

Joseph Ruffalo is President of Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center. He said negotiations were fruitful, however, with several joint initiatives planned.

He said that includes plans for collaborations on everything from physician recruitment to building a free-standing ambulatory center. Officials said they can improve efficiencies and save money.

Still, the New York State Health Commissioner could opt to revoke the license of either hospital if it failed to negotiate in good faith.

Judith Maness is president and chief executive officer for Mount Saint Mary's Hospital in Lewiston. She said they are fairly optimistic that will not happen.

Officials sent a joint statement to the Commissioner, explaining their reasons for the failed merger.
