Buffalo, NY – It is not just the younger generation who is interested in living in downtown Buffalo. A new Buffalo Place survey says there is a blend young and older downtown dwellers.
Buffalo Place wanted to find out who is living downtown. While 26% are between the ages of 25 and 34, 22% are 65 years or older. Only 8% are younger than 24.
Buffalo Place executive director Mike Schmand says this survey also indicates that downtown living is a new option for retirees.
The survey found that more than one-third of those living downtown have average household incomes of more than $70,000 a year. So far, much of the downtown living is geared toward those earning higher incomes. But Schmand says more affordable housing is needed.
Close to 500 new housing units have opened in downtown Buffalo over the past 3 to 4 years. And despite the tragic death of a construction worker killed at the start to turn the old Webb Building on Pearl Street in downtown housing, Schmand says developer Rocco Termini now has a waiting list for people to move in.
Buffalo Place says the survey delivered all very positive trends for the City.
