Buffalo, NY – The Buffalo School District is getting ready to extend the school day for some of its students when classes resume in September.
Sixteen Buffalo Public Schools are expected to add an extra hour to the school day. The schools selected are considered low performing schools. Governor Spitzer has provided funding called the contract of excellence. The district most improve those schools by adding a longer school day, creating smaller classes and improving the quality of its teachers and administrators.
Schools Superintendent James Williams says the District managed to hammer out a deal with the Buffalo Teachers Federation on extending the school day. Teachers will work either 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. or 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The BTF's executive board must give final approval to the extended day. But the district has already issued notices to parents about the longer school day because busing will be affected.
