New Vaccination Requirements for 6th Graders

By Eileen Buckley

Buffalo, NY – All 6th grade Buffalo Public School students must receive some new vaccines before they start school next month. It is now required under changes to the State Public Health law.

Along with the already required Chicken Pox vaccination, 6th graders will now need a new type of Tetanus shot. It offers protection against Whooping Cough. Assunta Ventresca is a registered nurse and the director of health related services for the Buffalo School District. She says health officials are finding that more and more children are experiencing whooping cough.

Ventresca also noted that it is not usually for the vaccination rules to change. The new rule applies to all 6th graders or those born on or after January first of 19-94.

Parents must contact their family doctor or health care provider to schedule an appointment. No 6th grader will be allowed to begin classes September 5th without proof that they received the shots. The change will effect about three thousand City school students.
