New York City, NY – Governor Spitzer met with top transportation officials Wednesday about the state's bridge inspection procedures. He admits the state must do a better job of funding repairs to New York's aging infrastructure.
After beginning the day in Buffalo, the Governor traveled to New York City for a briefing on bridges. That issue was overshadowed by an unexpected rainstorm in Manhattan that flooded subways and roads. But Spitzer did take time during a news conference to say the state will find the funding for bridge repairs. He said the rejection by voters of a transportation bond issue in 2000 is partially to blame for deteriorating bridges.
Following last week's bridge collapse, Spitzer ordered an immediate inspection of 49 bridges in New York that are similar to the Minneapolis span.
