Buffalo, NY – Convicted killer James Kopp has been sent to a high-security federal prison in Pennsylvania.
He's serving a life sentence for the 1998 sniper-style slaying of Dr. Barnett Slepian in the kitchen of his Amherst home.
Prison bureau officials declined to comment on why Kopp was placed in Lewisburg Federal Penitentiary, about 170 miles west of Philadelphia. The prison houses about 1,500 inmates convicted of the most serious crimes.
Kopp was convicted in January on federal charges that he violated the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act by killing an abortion provider. A jury also found him guilty of using a firearm in a violent crime.
Kopp had asked to serve his sentence in New York state.
Prior to his federal conviction, Kopp was serving a sentence of 25 years-to-life on state murder charges.
