United Steel Workers hear from Presidential Hopefuls

By Eileen Buckley

Buffalo, NY – The United Steel Workers International held a Presidential forum in Cleveland, Ohio late last week. It feature several of the presidential candidates.

Steel workers from across the US traveled to the two-day event to hear from four US presidential candidates. Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, John Edwards and Dennis Kucinich appeared. Barack Obama could not attend due to a fundraising commitment. William Pienta is director of the United Steel Workers District 4 in Buffalo.

Pienta says the candidates were asked about health care, trade and rebuilding manufacturing in American. He says the candidates presented their platforms then offered union members a chance to ask their own questions.

Pienta says he expects the United Steel Workers International to endorse a presidential candidate in the next couple of months. He says labor has one more house to get in order, and that is the White House in 2008.
