Sabres Could Not Afford Drury & Briere

By Eileen Buckley

Buffalo, NY – Buffalo Sabres managing partner Larry Quinn says the hockey club could not afford to keep Chris Drury and Daniel Brier. Quinn and Sabres general manager Darcy Regier met with reporters Monday afternoon to explain why the players are history.

The Buffalo Sabres lost two key players to free agency. Co-captain Chris Drury signed with the New York Rangers and co-captain Daniel Brier reached a deal to become a Philadelphia Flyer.

But top Sabres management offered an explanation. Sabres managing partner Larry Quinn defended their negotiating efforts.

Quinn says they were willing to pay Drury what he requested, but Drury made a personal choice not to return to Buffalo.

Both Regier and Quinn denied that the team waited too long to negotiate with Drury and Brier. In fact, they say they chased Drury very hard, and hoped he would return. Quinn says his message to fans is to "have a little faith".
