Buffalo, NY – The Uncrowned Queens has jump started a national project. They're are helping to collect and preserve the history of African American women in Oklahoma.

The leaders of Buffalo's Uncrowned Queens want to make sure Oklahoma includes some very important women as part of that state's centennial celebration.

Dr. Peggy Brooks-Bertram and Dr. Barbara Seals Nevergold say are working on a special publication that mark achievements of Oklahoma's uncrowned queens who were consider community builders over the past 100 years.

Nevergold says it was her colleague and co-founder of Uncrowned Queens, Dr. Brooks-Bertram who approached Oklahoma for this project. They recently returned from a trip to Oklahoma. Brooks-Bertram says they were honored by the Governor at a high tea along with some of Oklahoma's uncrowned queens.

Buffalo's Uncrowned Queens is currently in negotiations with the Smithsonian Institution on the possibility of including uncrowned queens within a new African American cultural museum in Washington, D-C.
