New Law Protects Internet Shoppers in New York

By Mark Scott

Albany, NY – Businesses that sell over the Internet will have to ship products within 30 days or provide New York consumers with a chance for a refund, under a bill signed Monday by Governor Eliot Spitzer.

The law essentially expands New York consumer protections, applying them to such large nationwide retailers as Amazon.com and to individual sellers over e-Bay.

A spokeswoman for Spitzer said it is critical that consumers shopping on the web receive the same protections as those who order products through traditional means.

The New York Public Interest Research Group called it an "important update" to New York's consumer protection law.
