Buffalo, NY – There will be a big bang at the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus this Saturday morning.
A 13-story medical building at 50 High Street will be demolished by an implosion around 6am. It's been vacant since 1993.
The building is located on a gateway to the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, which has already seen $600 million worth of development in recent years. Kaleida Health Spokesman Michael Hughes says there are no specific plans for the site as of yet.
"There's nothing on the books yet. A possible short-term use would be for parking," Hughes said. "It really opens up the north end of the campus. It would be an ideal setting for any kind of medical-related development."
Buffalo General Hospital is located across the street from 50 High Street. Hughes says precautions are being taken to protect the hospital and its patients.
Roads surrounding the demolition site, including a block of Main Street between North and Allen Streets, will be closed for a time early Saturday.
