Buffalo, NY – The new president and chief executive officer for the Roswell Park Cancer Institute said his goal is to make it a top ten cancer center. WBFO's Joyce Kryszak has more on Doctor Donald Trump's vision for Roswell.
Roswell Park opened the doors of its cancer center with a $10,000 grant. Today, the institute pulls in $80 million dollars in funding every year.
The research and treatment that takes place there is also growing in recognition.
Trump succeeds ten-year president David Hohn, who is credited with much of the institute's growth. Now, Trump said it is time to take Roswell to the next level, moving it into the ranks as one of the ten best in the country.
By most accounts, that will be a hard push.
Roswell is currently at about the middle of a very crowded pack of facilities. But Trump said they are measuring much more than numbers.
He said that includes patient care, research and education. And often he said those go hand in hand. Trump said additional funding will be the biggest challenge to achieving excellence in every category.
And he said innovation among the institution and its partners will be key to finding the necessary funding to expand and recruit.
Nobel Laureate Herbert Hauptman is president of the Hauptman Woodward Institute. Hauptman said they are excited by Roswell's new leadership, and are looking forward to even more collaborations to build on scientific and clinical research.
In addition to his new role as president for Roswell, Trump, who is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University, will also continue his own ground breaking research.
