Buffalo Marks Its 175th Anniversary As A City

By Mark Scott

Buffalo, NY – Friday is Buffalo's 175th anniversary. It was on April 20th, 1832 that Buffalo was incorporated as a city.

Much has changed since 1832. Back then, the Erie Canal was just seven years old. Buffalo became a transportation hub. By the 1901 Pan American Exposition, Buffalo was the eighth largest city in America. The city's population topped half-a-million in the early '50s. But since then, Buffalo's population and its fortunes have declined.

Mark Goldman is a Buffalo historian. His most recent book is "City on the Edge." He joined us on his cell phone to talk about "our fair city."
