Psychiatric Defense is Planned in Cop Shooting Case

By Eileen Buckley

Buffalo, NY – A psychiatric defense is being planned for the 18 year old accused of shooting two Buffalo Police officers in December.

Varner Harris, dressed in a white T-shirt and jeans, appeared before State Supreme Court Jusitce Penny Wolfgang Monday. Harris was been charged with the shootings of officers Carl Andolina and Patty Parete.

His attorney Paul Dell asked the judge for more time to complete a psychiatric evaluation of Harris as he prepares a psychiatric defense. Dell is claiming Harris was extremely emotionally distributed the night of the shootings on Elmwood Avenue.

Dell has the rest of the week to complete work on psychiatric evaluations. The judge has scheduled what is known as a Huntley hearing to be held April 30th to address statements made by Harris the night of his arrest. The defense is seeking to have Harris's confession suppressed. Judge Wolfgang says she will set a trail date following the April 30th hearing.
