Buffalo, NY – Kaleida Health says a recent medical study has Buffalo General Hospital as the best in Western New York for transplants.
A recent study from the Arbor Research Collaborative for Health and the University of Michigan shows survivability rates at Buffalo General Hospital for kidney and pancreas transplant recipients above regional and national averages.
Dr. Oleh Pankewycz is the director of Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Services at Buffalo General. He says Buffalo has become a regional medical destination. He says the key to success is a whole-patient approach to getting better.
The leading causes of pancreatic and kidney failure are diabetes and hypertension. Pankewycz says these are completely preventable illnesses.
The study also shows organ procurement rates in Western New York are some of the highest in the nation. Seventy-three percent of eligible donors' families agree to donation compared to 45 percent downstate.
