Buffalo, NY – The General Services Administration in Washington is telling the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee that it is giving the go-ahead for construction to start on the long-delayed federal courthouse in downtown Buffalo.
Congressman Brian Higgins says that construction should be underway at the Niagara Square site by Labor Day, and the building should be ready for occupancy in 2010.
"It has been determined that the existing Michael Dillon U.S. Courthouse is no longer adequate and has major security concerns," a statement from Higgins reads. "GSA received $14.2 million from Congress (earlier this decade) for acquisition of land and design of the new Buffalo Courthouse. However no funding was provided to move to construction until February 15, 2007 when Congress provided $280.8 million to GSA for courthouse construction nationwide."
The Judicial Conference ranks the Buffalo Courthouse as its top construction priority nationwide, according to Higgins.
