Buffalo, NY – The world famous Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre will be performing two shows in Buffalo next week at Shea's Performing Arts Center.
Alvin Ailey trained as a dancer in Los Angeles and made his debut as a professional dancer in 1953. Then, the following year he danced on a Broadway stage in New York City. By 1958 Ailey was joined by other young African American dancers for the first official performance as the Alvin Ailey dancers. They performed at the 92nd Street Young Men's Hebrew Association in New York, forever changing the perception of American dance, breaking barriers for African-American modern dancers.
Dancer Renee Robinson just celebrated her 25th year with Alvin Ailey. She says it was Ailey's vision and desire to make sure African American culture and dancers were recognized.
Next week, Buffalo will have a chance to experience the passion and unique style that is the trademark of this dance troupe in two separate shows. Alvin Ailey dancers will perform several selections at Shea's. On Tuesday February 13th, the program will feature "The River" and the "Golden Section." Then, on the 14th, dancers will perform "The Stevie Wonder" collection, as well as "Love Stories."
