Buffalo, NY – Governor Pataki says Gerald Ford's "unassuming manner" and "quiet personal dignity" restored confidence in the American presidency following Watergate. In a statement released following the death of the former president, Pataki described Ford as a "great patriot."
The governor ordered all state flags lowered to half-staff.
Gerald Ford made one visit to Buffalo as president. He campaigned here in 1976 just prior to his Election Day loss to Jimmy Carter. There are few active Republicans who remember the rally that was held at what was then known as the Statler-Hilton Hotel downtown.
Erie County Republican Chairman James Domagalski said he met Ford when the former president made a campaign appearance here in the 1990s on behalf of then-congressman Bill Paxon.
In September 1988, Gerald Ford appeared at the University at Buffalo as part of UB's Distinguished Speakers Series.
Domagalski said Ford's lasting legacy is that he served as an example that good guys can succeed in politics.
Domagalski said Ford restored "faith and belief" in the presidency following Watergate.
