Police Shooting Suspect Waives Hearing

By Mark Scott and Mark Wozniak

Buffalo, NY – One of the Buffalo police officers who was shot last week appeared at a court hearing Tuesday for the suspect accused of the shooting.

Officer Carl Andolina would not comment as he entered the courtroom. The suspect, 18-year-old Varner Harris, waived his right to a felony hearing. Harris' case now goes directly to a grand jury.

Police Commissioner McCarthy Gipson said it was important for Andolina to be there.

Officer Patricia Parete continues to recover from the life-threatening wounds she sustained in the shooting. She remains in serious condition at the Erie County Medical Center.

Merchants in the Chippewa-Elmwood neighborhood held a candle-light vigil last night for the two officers. Harris is accused of shooting Parete and Andolina as they tried to stop him following a report of a fight at a nearby convenience store.
