Buffalo, NY – Amherst has a new town budget, but no one is quite sure how big it is.
The town board failed to pass a budget by last night's midnight deadline, causing a default budget to take effect. However, the exact amount of that budget won't be known until Tuesday afternoon, since budget amendments the board did pass will have an impact on the estimated $110 million spending plan.
Council member William O'Loughlin says the board was unprepared.
"We don't use our time efficiently. We have to use it efficiently. The law caught up with us tonight," O'Loughlin said. "The budget law said time is up."
The original budget proposed by Amherst supervisor Satish Mohan called for a one percent reduction in spending.
