UB Disaster Preparedness Expert Recommends Future Snow Emergency Drills

By Mark Scott

Buffalo, NY – An expert in disaster preparedness at the University at Buffalo says the region needs to be better prepared for the kind of storm that disrupted power to hundreds of thousands of area residents over the past week-and-a-half.

Dr. Ernest Sternberg, a professor of urban and regional planning at UB, says there's not much appreciation among federal agencies that snow events can be serious emergencies. He says area residents take pride in being able to deal with large amounts of snow. But Dr. Sternberg says last week's major power outages shows just how vulnerable we are.
