Buffalo, NY – The City of Buffalo is teaming up with the Buffalo Fire Department in promoting fire prevention. But as WBFO'S Eileen Buckley reports, a large number of vacant homes remain a big fire threat in Buffalo.
October is fire prevention month. Over the next three Saturday's the Buffalo Fire Department will host open houses at four fire houses on the City's East and West sides, as well as North and South Buffalo.
Mayor Brown says they will hand out 500 free smoke detectors and 1,000 free batteries to residents on a first come first serve basis.
This year the City has recorded two fire deaths, both involved smoking materials. Last year there were 8-fire fatalities in Buffalo.
