Mixed Report on Math Testing in New York

By Mark Scott

Buffalo, NY – The State Education Department released data Wednesday on the results of Math exams given to students in grades three through eight last year.

The results show a steady and relatively higher level of achievement in Math in the elementary grades. Achievement levels dropped in the middle school grades. But there were some signs of progress in the Buffalo School District. More than 47 percent of fourth grade students in Buffalo met or exceeded the state standards in Math. That number fell to just 17 percent for eighth grade students.

The picture was much brighter in the wealthier Williamsville Central School District. Sixth, seventh and eighth grade students in Williamsville posted the highest scores of any local district on standardizes Math tests.

But the overall poor performance of middle school students statewide has education officials concerned. Since 2004, math instruction has been revised in all grades. And more teacher training is being offered.
