Youth Soccer Coach Arrested on Sexual Abuse Charges

By Mark Scott

Buffalo, NY – Erie County Sheriff's deputies have arrested a North Collins man on charges of sodomy and endangering the welfare of a child.

Fifty-year-old Michael Spicola, a youth sports coach who founded the Eden Youth Soccer League, is accused of sexually abusing a young boy over a fourl-year period. The boy, now 14, reported the abuse to his mother in May. Sheriff's Department Lieutenant Ron Kenyon said an investigation then began, which culminated in this week's arrest.

Kenyon says there does not appear to be any other cases.

"As of this time, no one else has come forward to tell us they have been subject to the same abuse," Kenyon said. "If anyone has been, we'd like to talk to them."

Besides his role as a soccer coach, Spicola is a former school bus driver for the North Collins school district. He is free on $15,000 bail.
