Akron, NY – An estimated 300 people turned out for a state Thruway Authority public hearing at Akron High School Tuesday night. At issue is the Authority's plan to move its congested Williamsville toll barrier eastward into the town of Newstead.
Residents in the more rural area made sure Thruway officials know of their opposition to the relocation. A suggestion that the Thruway eliminate tolls altogether was met with thunderous applause. Authority officials say that is not an option, even though tolls were supposed to be removed when the original construction bonds were retired ten years ago.
A final decision has not yet been made, but is expected soon. The new $40 million state of the art electronic facility would include highway speed EZ Pass lanes.
