Spitzer Pushes for Homeland Security Funding

By Mark Scott

Buffalo, NY – Democratic gubernatorial candidate Eliot Spitzer says he sent a letter to Secretary Michael Chertoff about the cut in Homeland Security funding to New York State. Spitzer asked Chertoff to reconsider.

During an appearance in Buffalo Wednesday, Spitzer said it was wrong to cut the funding.

"It would be wise to revisit the issue because the needs that we have at the homeland security level are very real," Spitzer said. "When you look at the types of projects that have been funded elsewhere in the nation versus those that have not been funded here, most of us think that, objectively, we deserve a bit more of the monney."

While in Buffalo, Spitzer was questioned about remarks made by state Democratic Chairman Denny Farrell that cutting taxes wasn't a top priority for his party. Spitzer says he's already made it clear that his top objective is revitalizing the state's economy. He says one of the ways of doing that is by reducing property taxes.

Farrell later retracted his remarks, claiming he "mis-spoke."
