Buffalo, NY – More than 2,700 property owners living along Cazenovia Creek in South Buffalo are being forced to pay for flood insurance.
It is mandated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency for those seeking mortgages, second mortgages or home repair loans. But the South District's Michael Kearns and the Lovejoy District's Richard Fontana say it's an unnecessary hardship for some of the residents.
Kearns says the risk of flooding in that portion of the city is overstated and the insurance is not needed.
"The last flood on record was back in 1959," Kearns said. "I think we have a better chance of winning the Super Bowl than having another flood in South Buffalo."
Lawmakers are calling on FEMA to eliminate the insurance for the residents they represent.
