Buffalo, NY – Last Wednesday, US Congresswoman Louise Slaughter announced that she would not provide a $97,000 federal grant earmarked for a demonstration kitchen inside the Broadway Market. But Monday Market officials spoke out against her actions.
Slaughter had said she decided to pull the federal funding after learning that the board was exploring outlet-style stores for the market. Market Executive Director Richard Fronczak says if Slaughter won't provide the funding to the Broadway Market, then she should give it to the East Side community.
"This is the poorest area of Louise Slaughter's district. It would be a shame if the money was taken away from the African-American community here," Fronczak said.
The board says Slaughter never contacted the Market directly about halting the grant. But Slaughter did inform them eight months ago that the funding was frozen.
