Buffalo, NY – The University at Buffalo's Department of Public Safety continues to investigate a weekend incident that occurred on the North Campus in Amherst.
A 20-year-old UB student accidentally fell from a fourth floor window at a residence hall around 3:30am Saturday. The student, identified only as a male from Central New York, was initially in critical condition. But he was later upgraded to stable at the Erie County Medical Center.
Vice President of Student Affairs, Dennis Black, says the University is trying to determine what led to his fall.
"We need to know what happened. How can an accident like that happen? Are there things that can help avoid that in the future and what were the factors that contributed to it -- a terrible mistake, a prank, horseplay, alcohol? At this point we honestly don't know," Black said.
Black says this is not a trend or common place occurrence at the University.
"We have 8,000 students in residence every year," Black said. "We have been on the North Campus now almost 35 years, and we have had three or four fall from window incidents throughout that entire time period."
Black says as the investigation continues, the University has several priorities, including care of the injured student, and providing any support that may be need for his classmates, family and friends.
