Two Law Enforcement Officers Shot and Wounded

By Associated Press

Bennington, NY – A 12-hour standoff is over at a Western New York home where two law enforcement officers were shot and wounded while responding to a 911 call.

Authorities in Wyoming County say the man inside the house emerged just after 6am Thursday when police fired a gas canister into the home in the rural town of Bennington, about 25 miles east of Buffalo.

That man has been identified as 30-year-old Joseph Cordier, Jr. Authorities say he's in custody and is being questioned.

The incident began around 6:30 Wednesday night when a sheriff's sergeant and a Village of Attica police officer were wounded by gunfire as they approached the home.

The sheriff's department says the two men were treated at a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

It's the third incident involving the shooting of a police officer in upstate New York in the past three weeks. A Utica-area officer was shot and killed in late February. Two days later, a state trooper was killed outside Elmira.
