Mayor Names H. McCarthy Gipson as Police Commissioner

By Eileen Buckley

Buffalo, NY – Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown has tapped a 35-year local law enforcement veteran to become the city's top cop. Brown appointed H. McCarthy Gipson as police commissioner Wednesday. Brown also named two deputy police commissioners -- Daniel Derenda and Byron Lockwood -- both veterans of the city police force.

Gipson says he plans to reach out to the Buffalo police union which continues to battle with the city over the wage freeze.

Gipson, who retired from the city police department in 1998, has recently served as superintendent of the Erie County Holding Center.
