Buffalo, NY – A local girls high school is promoting the meaning of peace.
The Buffalo Academy of Sacred Heart on Main Street in Eggerstville has created a special program called Arts for Peace. The event kicks off Monday.
Sacred Heart has invited students from seven area Catholic elementary schools and Villa Maria Academy to participate. Sr. Lois Batting says the students are encouraged to "bring their vision of peace." Then, some of the students will also participate in a special performance Wednesday night.
"We asked them to come and show us how they imagine peace, how they envision and embrace peace in their lives," Sr. Batting said.
The students will express their message of peace through a variety of performing arts, such as music, poetry, mime or dance. Sr. Batting says this will be the second annual Arts for Peace. The first year, she says, she was very amazed by the students creativity.
"It is touching to see how they imagine peace, and in some cases we have asked them to write an artist's statement explaining what they have created," Sr. Batting said. "And how they see it as illustrating peace."
Sr. Batting says in order to develop a spirt of peace in the world, it must begin in ones personal life. She says a school setting is the perfect place to start teaching peace.
"We try to spread it, and also how we envision it in our neighborhood, our city, our country and the whole world."
The entire Arts For Peace will run through February 6th.
