Slaughter, 20 Other Female House Members Say Alito Is A Threat To Women's Rights

By Eileen Buckley

Buffalo, NY – Questioning of Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito ended Thursday in the Senate Judiciary Committee. Congresswoman Louise Slaughter spoke out against Alito while in Buffalo Thursday.

"What I want is a judge who sleeps with the Constitution under his pillow," Slaughter said.

The Western New York Democrat said she is most concerned with Alito's views on privacy issues and presidential powers.

"We're not satisfied that he feels the President has to comply with the law," Slaughter said. "There's been a slippage of powers between the Congress and the executive branch that people have decried."

Slaughter and 20 other Democratic female House members also declared that Alito poses a direct threat to the rights of women.

"Obviously, I'm concerned about the right to choose," Slaughter said. "That's a serious issue."

Slaughter says she is not as comfortable with this nominee as she was with Judge John Roberts. But despite her concerns, Slaughter believes Alito will receive confirmation.
