Buffalo, NY – "Fortune" Magazine once again lists the Wegman's supermarket chain as one of the best companies to work for in the United States.
It's the ninth straight year that Wegman's has made the list. The ranking is based on a survey of 100,000 employees from 466 companies. They were questioned about their attitudes toward management and job satisfaction.
Wegman's spokeswoman Ann McCarthy says the chain prides itself on the investment it makes in its employees.
"We're a family owned company. We treat our employees like family," McCarthy said. "We make our decisions based on the values that that should motivate families. And we take care of each other."
Wegman's operates 69 stores, including 12 in Western New York.
McCarthy says the chain's presence on the list for so many years has resulted in increased applications from people who want to work there.
"It's certainly a great place for people starting out in their first job. We've been recognized by having such a high percentage of people in senior management who started with us when they were young," McCarthy said. "It's also a credit to the Wegman's family that an industry that is not necessarily been regarded as a great place to work has garnered such recognition for so many years."
Wegman's dropped a notch to number two in the latest ranking after being the top company to work for last year. But among large employers, it's still ranked at the top.
The only other companies from New York making the list were four financial services firms based in New York City.
