Top HUD Official Doesn't See Serious Problems with BMHA

By Mark Scott

Buffalo, NY – A top official from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development says the investigation into irregularities at the Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority will recommend ways of improving the operation.

HUD is currently finalizing the report will show lavish spending on the part of some commissioners and questionable handling of government contracts.

But during an appearance in Buffalo Monday, Deputy Secretary Roy Bernardi says he doesn't believe BMHA commissioners and staff are guilty of any serious wrongdoing.

"This seems to me more of an administrative problem," Bernardi said. "There are many good people who work for the Municipal Housing Authority. By and large, they do a nice job."

Bernardi says in some cases, HUD has done an administrative take-over of failed housing authorities elsewhere. But he said that won't be the case here.
