First Lake Effect Snow Storm Dumps More Than a Foot in the Southtowns

By Associated Press

Buffalo, NY – The season's first lake-fed snow in the Buffalo area has shut down more than a dozen schools in the suburbs south and east of the city.

While the city of Buffalo is being spared from the brunt of the storm, an area from Hamburg on the Lake Erie shore eastward to Elma already has anywhere from six inches to more than a foot of snow.

Town officials in Elma and Hamburg were advising against any unnecessary travel Thursday morning, while schools in the towns and in neighboring Orchard Park were closed. Schools were also closed in Attica in Genesee County.

Thursday morning's conditions are a sharp contrast to Wednesday's, when the temperature was around 70 degrees in the pre-dawn hours before plunging to the freezing mark Wednesday night.
