Schumer Questions Alito's Judicial Record

By Jill Morrison

Washington, DC – US Senator Charles Schumer says at first glance, he's concerned with Judge Samuel Alito's record.

New York's senior Senator was the first Democrat to hold a press conference Monday discussing his concerns with the Alito nomination.

"A preliminary review of his record raises real questions about Judge Alito's judicial philosophy and his commitment to civil right, workers rights, women 's rights," Schumer said. "The rights of average Americans, which the courts have always looked out for."

Members of the Republican leadership announced Monday that they want Judge Alito's confirmation hearings, and a vote on the Senate floor before the end of the year. Schumer worries this may not allow enough time to thoroughly review the judge's record.
