Washington, DC – US Senator Charles Schumer says Harriet Miers is not qualified to serve on the US Supreme Court. He was supposed to meet with Miers one more time before her confirmation hearings, but she withdrew her nomination Thursday.
Schumer says Harriet Miers made the right decision in withdrawing her nomination.
"Harriet Miers is a fine and capable person. But this was clearly the wrong position for her," Schumer said. "Her gracious withdrawal saves Harriet Miers and the nation from a difficult and agonizing process and decision."
Many lawmakers on Capitol Hill are saying the tepid republican reaction and a backlash from conservatives caused Miers decision. Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton says many attacks on Miers seem unjust.
"It's very difficult to operate in an atmosphere where there's such a mean-spirited attack machine," Clinton said. "But you know I respect her decision."
Miers -- who works as White House Counsel and has no experience as a judge -- wrote in a letter of withdrawal that her decision protects the separation of powers.
Schumer says President Bush should nominate someone with a clear record.
