Buffalo, NY – Mayor Anthony Masiello's last hours in office on New Year's Eve will be spent as honorary co-chair of the 17th annual First Night Buffalo celebration.
First Night's primary sponsor, the Independent Health Foundation, announced Wednesday that Masiello and his wife, Kate, have agreed to serve as co-chairs. Masiello said presiding over the New Year's Eve celebration will be bitter sweet.
"It's really appropriate because First Night has been important to Kate and me," Masiello said. "It's a great way for us to say thank you and goodbye to the people of Buffalo, New York as we usher in a new era in Buffalo with a new mayor."
For the first time in five years, First Night will be held downtown at the Buffalo Convention Center. The media received a preview yesterday with a performance from the Caribbean Extravaganza steel drum band, which will be among the entertainers this year. The convention center will be converted into a park-like setting with plenty of greenery, fountains and benches.
Independent Health President Dr. Michael Cropp says the event is a good fit for the health insurer.
"It's a drug- and alcohol-free event. It's a New Year's Eve option for the entire family," Cropp said. "With all the physical activities for the kids, it's part of our goal to improve health and wellness."
Independent Health officials said another reason for returning First Night downtown was so that their event will once again be within walking distance to the annual ball drop at midnight at Roosevelt Square.
They say free parking will be offered to First Night revelers at parking ramps adjacent to the Convention Center.
