Heavy Rains Drop One to Three Inches across Region

By Mark Scott

Buffalo, NY – Heavy rains across Western New York dropped one to three inches since early Sunday morning.

Going into the weekend, it was not expected that the remnants of Hurricane Rita would affect our region. But National Weather Service meteorologist Bob Hamilton said that changed as an approaching cold front began attracting the tropical moisture from Rita.

"Between Friday and today (Monday), the cold front slowed down just a little bit and allowed that moisture to be drawn up into the Ohio valley and into Western New York," Hamilton said. "So, rather than just picking up a few showers from the cold front, that rain was enhanced. We had a general one to three inch rainfall."

The weather service has canceled the flood watch that had been in effect for all of Western New York Monday morning. Hamilton said area creeks and streams seem to handling the heavy rains without any problems.
