Schumer Not Satisfied with Roberts' Answers

By Jill Morrison

Washington, DC – Democratic New York Senator Charles Schumer questioned Chief Justice nominee John Roberts one last time Thursday.

In the final round, Schumer asked few questions of Roberts. Instead, he shared his frustrations with the nominee and the Senate Judiciary Committee.

"What we need to know are the kinds of things that are coming before the court now and it make it particularly hard to know the kind of judge you'll be since we have little else to go on," Schumer said.

Roberts told Schumer to look at his writings as a federal judge.

"Senator Schumer, I don't think you can read those opinions and say these are the opinions of an ideologue," Roberts said. "You may think you need more of a sample, but I think if you look at what I've done since taking the judicial oath, you will find that I'm not an ideologue."

Senators on the Judiciary Committee now have 24 hours to submit written questions to the nominee. Schumer urged him to be more forthcoming in his written answers.

The committee votes on whether to confirm Roberts September 22nd.
