Jamestown, NY – Congressman Brian Higgins hosted a Town Hall meeting in Jamestown Thursday on the subject of Social Security reform.
According to Higgins, the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office estimates Social Security can pay 100 percent of current benefits through the year 2050.
Reforms President Bush and the Republican leadership of the House are pushing would partially privatize Social Security. Higgins says he's opposed to that.
"I opposed the President's initiative," Higgins said. "I believe that we should be providing the tax incentives to promote a higher rate of national savings, which is essentially at zero today."
Despite his opposition to private accounts, Higgins said the national series of meetings on the issue has been beneficial.
