Albany, NY – A new Quinnipiac University poll finds that former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani is the only high-profile Republican who could beat Democratic Attorney General Eliot Spitzer in a hypothetical matchup for governor.
But the Giuliani camp reiterated Wednesday that he has no interest in running for governor. Quinnipiac Pollster Maurice Carroll says he doesn't think Giuliani will change his mind.
"I don't see anything in the world that could make Giuliani run for governor," Carroll said. "It just doesn't make any sense. He's 'America's mayor.' (His response) to 9/11 established him as a top contender (for the presidency)."
In other matchups, the survey found Democrat Spitzer would beat current New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Westchester District Attorney Jeanine Pirro and former Independence Party candidate Thomas Golisano.
