Two Area NRG Power Plants on List of Dirtiest in Northeast

By Mark Scott

Buffalo, NY – The Huntley power plant in Tonawanda and a similar plant in Dunkirk are on a list of the ten dirtiest power plants in the Northeast.

The Albany-based group Environmental Advocates released a report yesterday that suggests the two plants, owned by NRG Energy, are responsible for a disproportionate share of carbon dioxide emissions compared to the electricity they generate. The group's global warming program director Christine Vanderlan said such emissions need to be reduced.

"The governors of the northeastern states are working on a program to set standards for carbon dioxide emissions from power plants," Vanderlan said. "This is a good time to set those standards and to send the right signal to companies like NRG."

Vanderlan said NRG alone is responsible for eleven percent of all the carbon dioxide emissions in the nine-state Northeast region.
