Portville Native Killed in Helicopter Crash in Afghanistan

By Associated Press

Portville, NY – A native of Western New York is reported to be among the casualties of a helicopter crash in Afghanistan that claimed the lives of 16 military members.

Acquaintances in Lieutenant Michael McGreevy's hometown of Portville in Cattaraugus County say the 30-year-old Navy SEAL was part of the commando unit that was killed when its helicopter crashed in a mountainous region on Tuesday.

There's been no official word on the identities of the casualties.

McGreevy was a 1993 graduate of Portville High School and graduated from the US Naval Academy. The married father of a one-year-old child lived with his family in Virginia Beach.

McGreevy is being remembered in his former hometown for his athletic skills and personable nature during his high school years. The school's principal says McGreevy's mother, who now lives in Virginia, informed him of her son's death Thursday.
