Buffalo, NY – Verizon Wireless has donated 20 cell phones to Child and Family Services' Haven House to combat domestic violence.
The cell phones will be distributed to domestic violence victims in the Buffalo and Amherst areas and will be used to call authorities in emergency or life threatening situations.
Undersheriff Timothy Howard attended a recent event where the donation was made. He said having access to a cell phone could make a difference for the victims of domestic violence.
"Last year alone, we responded to 800 domestic violence calls," Howard said. "That number points to the fact that we do have a problem. It's important that we have the resources to deal with that."
This donation is a part of the Verizon "Hopeline" program which donates used cell phones to organizations to combat domestic violence and help raise awareness.
